Today is Mother's Day and Ana gave Ed a break from his usual preaching responsibilities at the church. She shared about "A Mother's Gain--three things I have learned through my children." (In case you're curious, she gained trust, hope, and faith).

In 1977 my mom had a red cape tailored for my brother's school costume. After my brother was done with it, I took ownership of the cape and used it as part of my all-important superhero costume. Together we fought off all the imaginary villains that threatened our neighborhood.

Just yesterday, I received a package from Manila sent by my mom and guess what was in it? Donuts! Not! It was the red cape, of course. Finally after 30 long years, superhero and cape are reunited--and once again the planet is safe.

Last May, Jake and Jon turned 7 and 11, respectively. Jake celebrated with his friends at Chuck E. Cheese's (home of the rat who condones legalized juvenile gambling!). Jon took eleven friends to see "Spiderman 3" at the movie theater, followed by a pizza party at home.

Now that Rebekah has outgrown her old bed, we got her a new one. Problem is, Luna thinks that it's her bed too. In this picture, taken at around 11:00 p.m., Rebekah is sound asleep and completely unaware that Luna has jumped in to claim her spot on "their" new bed. Notice that Luna has yet to figure out which body part should be on the pillow.

We are sad to announce that our rabbit, Gerbil, died last Saturday, April 22, 2006. He was buried at our yard following a simple ceremony. May he rest in peace.

San Diego is such a beautiful city. We were able to tour the harbor on a floating bus! Yup. The bus took us around the harbor. When we reached the dock....splash!!!! We were now touring the city from the water. Way cool.

We also had a chance to stop by the Aircraft Carrier Midway--a decommissioned carrier that's now a floating museum.

Ain't Nothin' but a Hound Dog

With her childbearing years behind her, Ana finally decided to get a family dog. Meet Luna, a female Basset Hound. She's a 4 year old lady who loves to just chill--very mellow and low key. Needless to say the kids are overjoyed to have a new creature in the house that isn't human.

P.S. We haven't introduced Luna to Gerbil yet so we'll keep you posted.

I'm not a sports fanatic but when a friend offered me two tickets to a 49ers game (with pre-paid parking!) I obviously couldn't resist. I took my eldest son, Jonathan, with me and we had a blast. It was the first NFL game for the both of us and we enjoyed watching the players up close and personal.

Unfortunately, the 49ers lost to the Cardinals--but the $5.00 bottle of water was worth the experience. Besides, it might be another 37 years before someone offers me another set of tickets.

From Childcare to Bake Ware

You would think that closing a family childcare business would allow you more free time. Not so with Ana. After four years in operation, Tiny Hearts Family Childcare is no longer in business. Ana, however, has been as busy as ever.

This Fall she started work as an assistant teacher at a preschool for special needs children in Newark. The work has been both challenging and rewarding. The best part of the job is the schedule--Ana only works the morning shift so she has her afternoons free.

Also, Ana has been pursuing her passion for baking. She and her niece, Celine, started a cake business called Baking Kneads (http://bakingkneads.blogspot.com). All throughout summer she whipped up incredible cakes for weddings and birthdays. She even displayed her stuff at a marathon festival in San Jose where people went wild for her sweet sensations.

I must say, however, that it is very challenging to be a diabetic married to a baker. Thank God for Splenda!

My Favorite Brownie

Quick--name your favorite brownie. Fudge? Triple chocolate? Walnut?

My doctor would be horrified if she found out that I'm now addicted to a brownie. But don't worry, it's not what you're thinking--I'm talking about my daughter, Rebekah, my absolute favorite Brownie!

After one year as a Daisy Scout, Rebekah has now graduated into a Brownie Scout. Her scout leaders include Mrs. Harden and Mrs. Miciano (a.k.a. mom). So watch out folks, Rebekah might be in a neighborhood nearby to charm you into buying a few boxes of Brownie Scout goodies. Yum!

Making the Band

Welcome the newest percussionist of the Warwick Elementary School Band! Last Monday Jon officially started Band Class as a 4th grader at Warwick. He will be concentrating on the snare drum and bells.

This is not Jon's first experience with playing an instrument. He has been an avid drummer since he was 8 years old. He continues to get better and better under the instruction of his teacher, Mike Mandes (Allegro Music). His musical influences are the Beatles, Green Day, Weezer, Billy Joel, and Earth, Wind, and Fire.

Jon's gear consists of Sonor 503 drums, Sabian cymbals, Wuhan china cymbals, Zildjian and Vic Firth sticks, Pro-mark hot rods, CB Bells, and a Yamaha DD-50 electronic drum kit.

Jacob Tell

Jacob tried his hand at archery and he's a natural! Perhaps with enough training we might see him represent the country in the 2012 Olympics.

Jacob is a brand new Kindergartener at Warwick Elementary School. His favorite subject is drawing and recess.

One flu over ....

I didn't get a flu shot this year because, as my doctor put it, I don't qualify as "desperate" enough given the current shortage of flu vaccines. And what should happen to me last night? You got it! I got the flu.

I'm sure there are worse things in life but right now I can't think of any. My body aches, my "dose" is stuffy and my head is pounding. If things don't get better soon I may even have to miss church tomorrow--not good if you happen to be the pastor.

But what's a pilgrim to do? For now it's plenty of liquids, lots of bedrest, and flipping through endless cable channels, 90% of which I don't care for (and I'm paying for this!).

My name is Ed--and I'm a diabetic. My doctor just put me on a new medication to control my blood sugar and bad cholesterol levels. Problem is, she doesn't want me to do any driving until we know for sure how my body will react to the medication. Diabetes can affect eye sight, motor skills and may cause loss of consciousness, all of which are considered dangerous when operating a motored vehicle.

Pretty tough order to follow since I've become so dependent on my car. Whether it's work, the grocery or the video rental store, my trusted car has been able to take me there. But not for now. I'm currently at the mercy of my wonderful driving wife and the BART/Bus system.

It felt awful at first. But I'm starting to get the hang of this. Since Ana's been driving I've actually been able to enjoy the sights of the Bay Area. The other day we were driving over the San Mateo bridge and throughout the ride I just gazed at the beauty of the cities of San Francisco and Oakland which were incredibly visible on that clear fall morning.

As for the BART/Bus, what a great place to relax and think! No one calling for your attention, no TV, no email--how come nobody told me about this?

If this keeps up I may give up driving all together....but then again, maybe not.

(author's note: As of March 2005, I've been driving again...oh what a beautiful thing!)
